Memory in Death (In Death, Book 22) by JD Robb

 

Memory in Death gives us more of Eve's past. We see Eve's first foster experience, and it's not a good one. Still, it was better than what she'd come from. The system truly did screw it up with Eve, and yet that's what made her who she is today. Her strong moral code, her views of what is right and what is wrong... these experiences molded her. And they created an child who worked hard to be in a position of control when she grew up. She's in charge now.

Here's the blurb:

When Trudy Lombard, Eve’s abusive foster mother, claims she came all the way to New York just to see how Eve is doing, her fiercely protective husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise—and a blackmail attempt by Trudy proves his suspicion correct. At first I was worried that this would be another "Roarke proving he didn't do it", or possibly a "Eve having to prove she didn't do it". But there was none of that, thank goodness, as I don't believe I could have enjoyed either of those storylines.

As for the writing elements:

• The murder plot was decent, the personal aspects of the plot were good.
• Pacing had some issues.
• Prose and dialogue were excellent.
• Character development was once again pushed and shaped and molded.
• World-building was consistent with previous books in the series.

I came close to a 9 of 10 for the pacing issues, but decided on a 10 of 10 in the end.
