Promises in Death was a hard book to read, in places. When death hits closer to home, it's not so easy to just "work the case". Eve manages it, mostly, but she has a tough time of it, emotionally.
Many of the books in this series could be stand alone murder mysteries, but I'm not so sure this one could be. It ties in with the villain from a previous book, and there are also ties to Eve and Roarke's childhoods. I tend to like it when books are melded together by longer story arcs, so Promises in Death filled that bill for me just fine.
Here's the blurb:
Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces down a cop killer. Amarylis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she’s been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she’s taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn’t just “one of us.”
As for the writing elements:
- The murder plot was decent, but it's the emotional ties in this book that are the driving force.
- Pacing was mostly okay.
- Prose and dialogue were exceptional.
- Character development was nice - Eve and Roarke continue to grow emotionally.
- World-building was consistent with previous books.
- Book Rating: Promises in Death: 10 of 10
